Okay, so here's the thing: I know I already did it once but it was a long time ago, before I knew all of you and before I saw S2 and before everything. So that's my second attempt to persuade even more people to watch that show. The show is called
Dead Like Me and it's absolutely magnificent.
There are two seasons of DLM, 14-15 eps each. I have no idea why Showtime decided to cancel the show and you won't find a person who understands their decision. There are various petitions all over the Net, there are
protests. People send emails, write letters, more and more people learn about the show through friends, dvds, vhs tapes and other sources. There is still a small chance for next season but I don't get my hopes up. We got two seasons of amazing television and this way, we learn to appreciate every episode.
.The Show::
It's a dark, sarcastic, wonderfully eccentric, really funny and very complex comedy/drama/sci-fi show. It's not another unambitious and shallow tv show. Yes, it's really entertaining and yes, it's addictive but you have to think while watching it - the ability to read between the lines wouldn't hurt, either. Like I already said, there are two seasons and the show gets better and better with every episode.
.The Story::
Georgia Lass (but others call her George or Georgie) is a main character. She is 18-year-old loner who has interest in literally nothing and feels pretty comfortable with it. She dropped the college and her mother Joy, who doesn't really know how to talk to her apathetic daughter, wants her to get herself a decent job instead of wasting her life at home, doing nothing. So George does so and, of course, she isn't interested in her job at all.
Everything suddenly changes one day, during her lunch break - she gets killed by a flaming toilet seat from the MIR space station. Seriously, it's true! So anyway - it's not the end, it's the beginning of her next life if I can say so. She learns that she is now a grim reaper and is introduced to other members of the group - Rube (the boss), Mason, Roxy and Betty.
Reapers are all undead and they're living their lifes like they used to, except that they really aren't. What I mean is that they still have to live somewhere, eat and earn money. People can still see and touch them, although they look different from how they looked when they were alive. And even if their lives has already ended, they still have to learn what life is really about. They laugh and they cry, they have problems. They love, hate, hurt. Feel sad or feel happy. They discover that it's not that bad, being dead like them.
.The Characters::
There is a great variety of complex, interesting characters who change and grow with time. And trust me - even if you aren't sure if you like them at first, they'll grow on you over the series. They're not perfect, they're quite fucked up to be honest but...it's just that seeing them dealing with themselves and learning things about their lives and themselves makes you love or at least respect them.
George
Like I already said, she is young, apathetic and sarcastic. She's also very smart and very lost. Paradoxically, her death is some kind of a wake-up call and the beginning of true life. It helps her understand what is really important in life and that it's never too late to change yourself.
Ellen Muth does a great job playing George - it's really difficult to show everything her character deals with but she most certainly succeeds in it.
Rube
He is played by great Mandy Patinkin. Rube is wise, patient and protective leader ot the reapers group. For most of the time, he is kind and understanding. Sometimes he is really fucking mean. He has to take care of the job and other members of the group. Rube is a very secretive character. He is calm and responsible and you respect from the first moment you see him.
Mason
"Mason...ooooh, Mason, Mason, Mason" - George in the Pilot.
Do you want me to be honest with you? He was the main reason why I started watching the show in the first place. Mason. Is he only a careless pitty thief and druggie? Or maybe he's just a lost guy who can't find his place in that mess.
Mason is funny, adorable, pretty and irresistible. He'll make you laugh, he'll make you cry. He is crazy - you want to know how he died? He drilled a hole in his dead trying to seek a permanent High. Yes. Even if he is careless, he is also sensitive and caring - he is simply a good man.
Here is a gorgeous Callum Blue pic.
Oh and I think I should mention his
accent. Cause he is
British, you know *wink wink*
Roxy
"That's Roxy. She could kick.your.ass" - George in the Pilot.
She is tough on the outside and sensitive deep down inside. She is not afraid to tell people what she really thinks, she isn't very social, either. She's a bit bitter but it's because she went through a lot of stuff when she was alive. It took me some time to really like her but she is a really important part of the group. Also, as the series go, you see that Roxy is so much more than a tough bitch.
Daisy
"I hated her instantly" - George in My Room.
We can see her for the first time in My Room (1x06). Not my fav character at first but wow, just wait to see her in S2.
Daisy is an actress. She probably died while blowing Clark Gable. A bit cocky. Pretty. Unbelievably irksome. Possibly totally different when nobody is watching her. Is she really that self-centered? What is her story? It's amazing how much depth her character gets in S2. You'll be speechless.
There are also George's parents and her younger sister Reggie. They try to deal with George's death and themselves in different ways as their life has completely changed. Can things get back to normal, can they move on? Is it really possible? Wait and see.
.The Writing::
There is no real action continuity which means that you can watch for example 1x04 and 1x06 without 1x03 and 1x05 like I did. But I advice you not to do it as a lot of things happen in every ep and it's easy to get lost in it.
The scripts are superb, the dialogue is brilliant - they say "shit", "fucking" etc like, every two minutes and it's totally awesome.
The stories told in every episode are always fresh and highly entertaining. Smart. You're gonna love every single episode.
I'm sure you'll be hooked immediately cause the pilot? It simply kicks ass.
( Here are some caps from the pilot ).Where can I find episodes?I'll try to upload the pilot for you, if you're interested. You're gonna love it and then, you have two options:
